Activities

Welcome to Khao Lak an area of over 25 kilometres of beautiful beaches, bordered by the beautiful turquoise ocean on one side and the lush green forest and mountains on the other it is located in a National Park. On the west coast of Thailand, on the Andaman Sea, if you can tear yourself away from all that Khao Lak itself offers it is the gateway to many beautiful sightseeing attractions in the area, Khao Sok National Park, Similan and Surin Marine National Park, Ao Phang Nga National Park to name just a few. Khao Lak is conveniently located about an hour drive or speedboat trip from all these locations. Exploring Khao Lak by yourself adds another dimension to your vacation as, once off the main highway, you are into the real Thailand with its natural beauty, such as waterfalls, and friendly people.

Similan and Surin Marine National Park

The Ko Similan National Park (which includes Koh Tachai, nicknamed the Maldives of Thailand) and Ko Surin Marine National Park give you an opportunity of a life time to enjoy crystal clear waters and powdery white sandy beaches and the amazing underwater life you will find when snorkelling or diving.

Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is just 60 km north from Khao Lak and is the oldest evergreen rainforest in Asia. With its mix of tropical rainforest and unmatched lime stone scenery Khao Sok is an amazing place for a day, or more, trip using either of the Cousin Resorts as your base. Stay in a tree house to make it even more memorable! Just one hour further on is the awesome Ratchaprapha Dam (the largest single civil engineering project ever in Thailand) and the amazing Cheow Lan Lake, created as a result of flooding the valley. Here you can stay in a raft house floating on the lake!

Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island

Phang Nga Bay is one of the world's largest mangrove forest and eco systems. With the hundreds of small and big lime stone islands the scenery is simply beautiful. Enjoy the islands with caves leading to enclosed lagoons or Hongs, James Bond Island and the mangroves in Phang Nga Bay by relaxing sea canoe. As part of a trip here the amazing Wat Suwankeha or Monkey Temple with its huge reclining Buddha and troupes of monkeys should not be missed.

Khao Lak Local Safari

In addition to its own glorious beaches there are other more secluded ones in the area. Visit waterfalls, enjoy an elephant trek, take a leisurely ride down river on bamboo rafts or an exciting white water or ATV ride – all can be found not far from Khao Lak.

Diving is the Number One sea based activity in Khao Lak which is the closest point to the Similan Islands Marine National Park and to other important dive sites like the Richelieu Rock. Activities In Khao Lak

813 Police Tsunami Boat and Tsunami Memorials

The 813 Police Boat was guarding HRH the Princess when the 2004 Tsunami drove it onto the land 2 kilometres from the sea. It is now a memorial to the dreadful events of that day and can be found across from the Market in Bang Niang. The main Memorial to the victims of the Tsunami is located in the village of Ban Naam Khem, some 20 kilometres north of Khao Lak facing Koh Kho Khao. There are also two fishing boats that were driven ashore by the monster wave and now provide a further memorial.

Market

Bang Niang Market is the largest in the Khao Lak area opening from about 2pm to 7pm, Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. You will find everything from souvenirs and jewellery to fish and meat, clothes and hardware to fruit and vegetables and can enjoy local “street food” while you do your shopping.

Nightlife at Khao Lak

Nightlife in Khao Lak offers a choice between restaurants serving, of course, mainly Thai food both local and regional but with a growing number offering international cuisine, bars and places with live music which often stay open until late.
